10 Reasons Why You Should Remodel Your Living Room and Foyer

10 Reasons Why You Should Remodel Your Living Room and Foyer
User Rating

The place where you greet visitors is your foyer and where you spend a lot of your time when you are not in the kitchen is your living room. These are both important spaces, and when you are looking to remodel, they are some of the first rooms you should look at.

While often overlooked when a remodel is undertaken because the focus is often kitchens and bathrooms, here are ten reasons you should remodel your living room and foyer.

1. First Impressions

What is the first thing someone sees who comes into your home? Your foyer, and in many cases your living room. These rooms set the tone for their visit. They also set the tone for you every time you come home. Improving this space can make a great first impression, amd you never get a second chance at that.

2. Your Door is Ajar

It’s an old joke that your door is a door, except when it is “a jar”. However, over time doors do warp, materials do become damaged and sun faded, and the look becomes outdated. Even before you open it, the first thing visitors to your home see is the door. Want to make a simple change that will affect a huge difference? Then get a new front door and rework the frame and seals. Not only will it look better, but your home will be more energy efficient as a result.

3. Let There Be Light

There are a couple of really good reasons to update the lighting in your foyer and living room. The first is appearance. Modern light fixtures look better and function better than older counterparts even if they are of vintage style. They provide more, clearer light.

The second reason is energy efficiency. LED bulbs and CFL lights offer versatility and energy savings that can be huge when factored over time.  Of course, you will need to change the lighting in more places than just the foyer and living room to have a true impact, but it is a great place to start.

4. It Helps Keep Things Clean

Your entryway is a great place to not only set the tone for your home, but to help keep things clean. If you are going to have visitors remove their shoes, this is a good, tasteful space to have them do so. A coat closet or coat tree will allow outdoor garments to dry or air out someplace other than your furniture.

This is a simple way to cut down on housework later. A clean entryway is the gateway to a cleaner home.

5. Your Flooring is Out of Date or Worn

Want another reason to remodel the foyer and living room? Look down. That old carpet and flooring needs to be replaced, and you might as well do it now. Old carpet can hold stains and odors, tiles can become chipped, and hardwood flooring can need sanding and refinishing or even replacement.

Look at your floors and see if they are not one more argument for remodeling your living room and foyer.

6. Decor Speaks Volumes

Photos, objet d’art, vases, and even frames say a lot about your home, and the right art is important. Even something as simple as changing out old frames, refreshing or cleaning glass, and dusting can make a huge difference in the impression your art makes on your guests and even how it makes you feel.

7. Have a Seat

Once you reach the living room, you want a comfortable place to sit. A sofa and a chair that are worn often don’t offer the comfort they once did. This seating can also make a huge difference in the appearance of your room. A good choice is a contemporary but pretty evergreen design, something practical but that will not go out of style before it ages out of usefulness.

Color is important as well, as that also sets the tone for your room. Soft, welcoming colors that may even seem a little boring are best in these circumstances.

8. Modern Entertaining

It is almost impossible to keep up with this all the time, as entertainment changes constantly, but wireless sound systems, high definition televisions, and more modern looking electronics that take up less space are all better entertainment solutions.

In fact, things like the Apple Home Pod, Google Home, and Amazon Echo double as speakers and voice controls for many smart appliances in your home. They can even control your television experience, change channels for you, find movies, and more. These are also low-profile speakers that offer exceptional sound quality as well.

A modern upgrade to your entertainment equipment can take your living room to the next level.

9. All-around Comfort

From cushy area rugs to pillows thrown onto furniture, there are a lot of things you can do when it comes to remodeling your living room that really do one thing: they increase overall comfort. You want your guests to not only feel welcome, but feel comfortable and at home as well, and often a remodel of your living area is just what’s needed to do so.

10. Security

Last, but certainly not least on the list is security. Modern technology allows for things like a video doorbell, security cameras, and active and intelligent alarm systems that put you in control of the security of your home. Having these things at the front door and in the foyer can help to prevent crime and even just nuisance. Better security can also come from replacing your front door and adding windows and other features too.

Not always the first thing we think of when it comes to remodeling, both the foyer and the living room are important spaces to consider> After all, they are the first impression others have of your home, and the comfort they take in staying there.
