How to Overcome Soil Moisture and Drainage Issues

Rain is welcome in most areas, particularly when it helps the surrounding vegetation to thrive and grow. Excessive amounts of rain, however, can lead to several problems. Due to the different types of terrain, not all earth and dirt is capable of allowing water to drain away. Sometimes, the sheer amount of rain also contributes to a large amount of water being retained in the earth.

This can lead to several problems, one of the most common ones being soil erosion. This loss of earth can lead to numerous issues, particularly ones related to vegetation, construction, and transportation. To avoid these unnecessary risks and costs caused by the erosion of land, several countermeasures can be taken. Here are some of the more common ways of preventing such a loss:

Target Lower Layers

One of the reasons that water is not drained away properly can be due to an impervious lower layer. While the top layer may be effectively allowing water to wash away, the layer below it may be uncooperative. For instance, hardpan can cause water to build up within the earth. This is why you should ensure that you investigate the dirt below the surface. If there is hardpan within thirty inches of the top layer, this should be penetrated. This will help to encourage drainage.

Placing Grids

One of the best erosion control systems nonetheless, is undoubtedly setting down a plastic grid. This grid prevents the earth from mixing with the rains and spreading out or washing away. To make this method even more effective, there are other measures that can be taken. Below the grid, a geofibre matting is placed. These fibres blend with the soil, aiding in the reinforcement of the actions of the grid. The grid is then placed on top of the geofibre matting. Gravel can then be spread on top of the grid, further eliminating earth loss. The gravel helps to improve the drainage of the dirt layers, preventing mud and erosion. This method is particularly helpful for areas that incur a great deal of construction and traffic. The durability of the products ensure that they can withstand harsh conditions.

Retaining Walls

Another way to prevent earth from spreading and thinning out the areas of dirt is to build retaining walls. The retaining wall will act as a barrier against the water logged earth. Thus, instead of dispersing, it will remain within that particular area. Furthermore, the water will be retained within the boundary. This will allow the earth to slowly absorb the water over a period of time. For this strategy to truly be effective, however, it needs to be used in conjunction with other tactics that prevent dirt from eroding.

Planting Vegetation

While planting vegetation is one of the more traditional ways of overcoming drainage problems, it cannot be used everywhere. For instance, in areas such as construction sites, this may not be the most viable option. It is also a little more time consuming than other methods. For domestic purposes, however, it may be quite useful. The main advantage of planting vegetation is that the roots prevent the dirt from moving around too much by stabilizing the earth.

These are some of the easiest ways to overcome soil moisture and drainage problems. Each of these techniques can be used for various types of earth dispersal. Depending on your requirements, one of these tactics should be more useful than others.
